You are about to answer the Genuine Student questions, the requirement that verifies your primary intention in coming to Australia is to study. It is part of the Student Visa, subclass 500. It asks you to explain your current situation, why you have chosen this course, this institution, and Australia, and what the training will offer you.

There is no single answer that will work for everyone. What is assessed depends on your current situation, the course you choose, your academic record, and any evidence you can provide. Furthermore, each answer is limited to 150 words , so every sentence must convey something specific about you.

Let’s look at what each question assesses, how to write answers that support your documents, and what misconceptions to discard before you begin.

What is Genuine Student and what did it replace?

The Genuine Student status replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant, known as GTE. It applies to applications submitted from March 23, 2024 onwards . Applications submitted before that date were assessed under the old system.

This requirement is assessed within the online Student Visa application form. Your answers provide context for the documents you submit, and the evaluator reads them along with the documents.

The assessment focuses on your current study plan: why this course, why now, and what it means within your career path.

What do the questions assess?

The form includes several questions about you and your plan. You can find the official description on the Department of Home Affairs’ Genuine Student requirement page .

Your current situation

This question covers your current circumstances: family ties, relationship with your community, employment, and economic situation.

Why this course, this center, and Australia?

You must explain why you want to study that course, with that institution, and in Australia. The question also assesses your knowledge of the course requirements and student life in the country.

What does the course offer you?

You will need to explain how completing the training will benefit you.

If you have already had a Student Visa or are in Australia

There is an additional question for those who have already held a Student Visa or are applying from Australia with another type of visa.

Anyone who has already studied in Australia will need to demonstrate that their academic progression is logical and that they have met the requirements of their courses. If you change your visa, you will need to prove that you are doing so to study and not just to extend your stay in Australia.

Other relevant information

The form also allows space to add information that doesn’t fit into the previous questions, such as a period without studying or a change of sector.

How to write a coherent response

In a coherent application, everything tells the same story. Your answers, your CV, your qualifications, your chosen course, and your funding all need to fit together.

  • ¿Qué has estudiado y en qué has trabajado hasta ahora?

Fondos “Tengo dinero suficiente.”

Preguntas frecuentes

¿Qué es el Genuine Student en Australia?

This is a requirement for the Student Visa, subclass 500, which assesses whether your primary intention is to study. It applies to applications submitted from March 23, 2024 onwards .

How many words can I write in each answer?

The limit is 150 words per answer. It’s most useful to dedicate them to specific details about yourself, your course, and your plan.

What if the course is unrelated to what I studied?

It depends on how you explain it. A career change might make sense, but you’ll have to justify what the course offers you and back it up with documentation.

How much money do I need to show for a Student Visa?

It depends on the length of your stay and who is traveling with you. The main applicant must demonstrate sufficient funds of AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living expenses, in addition to travel and tuition fees.

Does Genuine Student have a separate cost?

No. It is assessed within the Student Visa, which costs from AUD 2,500 per application as of July 1, 2026.

Can I apply for a Student Visa if I am already in Australia on another visa?

It depends on your visa. When the request is possible, you’ll need to answer an additional question and demonstrate that the change is for educational purposes. To review your specific case, please contact us.
