Can I apply for a student visa while I’m in Australia?

It depends on the visa you hold now. On a tourist or Working Holiday visa, you’ll need to apply from outside Australia. If you already hold a student visa, you may be able to apply for another one while you’re in the country in certain circumstances.

What to know if you’re already in Australia on a tourist, work or student visa.

You’re in Australia and want to keep studying. Perhaps you arrived as a tourist, you’re on a work visa or Working Holiday, or your student visa is about to end. Can you apply for a student visa without leaving the country?

It depends on the visa you hold now. On a tourist or Working Holiday visa, you’ll need to apply from outside Australia. If you already hold a student visa, you may be able to apply for another one while you’re in the country in certain circumstances.

Here’s how the rules differ, so you can plan what to do next.

If you’re on a tourist or Working Holiday visa

Under the current Australian government rules, tourist and Working Holiday visa holders must be outside Australia when applying for a student visa. You must also be outside the country when it’s granted. The tourist visa restriction has applied since 2024; the Working Holiday restriction took effect in October 2026.

You can still start planning before you leave. You can choose a course, speak with the school and get your documents ready while you’re in Australia.

Do I have to go back to my home country?

Not necessarily. You can apply from another country, provided you can enter and stay there legally. Returning home is also an option if that works best for your plans.

Processing times can vary. Before you leave Australia, plan where you’ll stay and how you’ll cover your costs while you wait.

Can I return to Australia while I wait for a decision?

You may be able to return if you have another valid visa that lets you enter and stay in Australia. You’ll need to follow that visa’s conditions and be outside the country when your student visa is granted.

If you return as a tourist, remember that you can’t work on that visa. You also shouldn’t travel with the intention of starting your studies while you wait for approval.

If you already have a student visa and want to keep studying

If your student visa is about to end and you want to continue studying, you’ll need to apply for a new one. What people often call a renewal is a new application; your current visa isn’t extended automatically.

Since 2 October 2026, you can only apply for another student visa from within Australia if you meet one of the exceptions. If you don’t, you’ll need to apply from outside the country and be outside when it’s granted. The same applies if you hold a student visa as a family member and want to become the main student applicant.

When can I apply from within Australia?

There are several situations where this may be possible, provided you meet the conditions of the exception. For example:

  • You need up to 12 more months to finish your course and are staying with the same school. If you’re studying a course package, the course you need to finish must be the principal course.
  • You’ve completed your course and are moving on to a higher qualification, such as Certificate III to Certificate IV, or Certificate IV to Diploma.
  • Your school stops delivering your course and you can’t continue it.
  • You’re going to study for a doctorate or belong to another group covered by the immigration department’s exceptions.

Each exception has its own conditions. For example, to move on to a higher course, you must have completed the principal course covered by your current visa and meet the entry requirements for the new programme.

What if I want to take English followed by a vocational course?

If you already hold a student visa and want to apply for another one from within Australia to continue studying, there are restrictions on including several courses in one application. Under the exception for progressing to a higher qualification, your application must be for a single future course.

If you’d like to combine English and vocational study, check your situation before enrolling. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to arrange the course package and apply for your new visa from outside Australia.

What to arrange before applying for your new visa

Whether you need to leave Australia or can apply from within the country, it helps to go through these points early:

  • When your current visa expires and which conditions apply.
  • Your course, school and the next available start date.
  • Enrolment payments and what happens if you need to change dates.
  • Your confirmation of enrolment, health insurance and the documents needed for your circumstances.
  • Your budget, including the visa fee and, if you need to leave Australia, travel and living costs while you wait.

Booking a course doesn’t extend your current visa. Check your situation before making payments and leave enough time to prepare the application.

Frequently asked questions

Can I arrange my enrolment while I’m in Australia?

Yes. You can choose a course and arrange your enrolment while you’re in Australia. Where you can submit your visa application will depend on your current visa and whether you meet the relevant conditions.

How long does student visa approval take?

There’s no fixed processing time for everyone. It can vary from one application to another, so allow for that when choosing your course start date and making plans.

What if I applied before 2 October 2026?

Applications submitted before that date are assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged. Booking or paying for a course doesn’t count as submitting a visa application.
