Before buying you the surfboard

Byron Bay is the smallest of Australia's study destinations, on the north coast of New South Wales. It is famous for its alternative culture: yoga, wellness, organic markets, and art. The economy lives entirely on tourism (hospitality, surfing, festivals) and the subtropical climate is warm all year round. The pace of life is slow and the boundary between work and the beach is practically non-existent. Keep in mind that Byron is small: the school options are limited and accommodation gets difficult during festival season. If you are interested, it is best to book further in advance than in a big city. We'll go over it with you on the call. See the complete expense breakdown at living in Australia.

WHERE TO LIVE

Beach, south, or hinterland?

Byron Bay is small enough that its three student zones are all within a 15-minute drive of Main Beach. Where you land depends on your budget and whether you want the surf at your door or a cheaper rent inland.

Town Centre

Byron CBD · Main Beach · Belongil. From $350 AUD/week. Walking distance to Main Beach, the cafés, and the festival venues. Byron's most expensive zone but everything's at the door.

South Byron

Suffolk Park · Tallow Beach · Broken Head. From $300 AUD/week. Quieter surf, cheaper rent than the centre, 10-minute drive or bus into town. Locals' favourite zone.

Hinterland

Mullumbimby · Lennox Head · Bangalow. From $250 AUD/week. Cheaper inland towns 15–20 minutes from Byron, with cafés, markets and a bus into town.

TESTIMONIALS

What are you going to do here?

Work

Tourist-town hospitality, every month.

Byron Bay lives off tourism: hospitality, surf school assistants, market stalls, and wellness studio reception. Summer (December to February) is peak hiring season, and festivals (Bluesfest in April, Splendour in July) skyrocket demand. We tell you how much people really get paid and where to look in our guide to working in Australia.

LIFESTYLE

Surf, lighthouse, and Wollumbin views.

Walk to the lighthouse at sunrise, surf, and make the most of the area's markets and festivals.

Community

Everybody knows everybody.

Byron is a town of about 9,000 inhabitants. The community is mostly Australian and young, and international students are few. That means real immersion: you hang out with Australians from day one and integrate faster. Prefer to compare before deciding? Here are all your cities of Australia.
