Before you pop the first bottle.

Adelaide is Australia's fifth largest city and the most relaxed, famous for its manageable size and more than 200 days of sunshine a year. The climate is Mediterranean: dry, warm summers, mild winters. Adelaide Metro covers buses, trains, and trams with a single MetroCard. The vineyards of Barossa and McLaren Vale are an hour from downtown, and the quality of life is among the highest in the country. Check out the full expense breakdown at living in Australia.

WHERE TO LIVE

CBD, inner east, or coast?

Adelaide has three broad areas to choose from, depending on your budget and whether you prefer the beach or the centre.

City Centre

CBD · North Adelaide · Kent Town. From $250 AUD/week. Markets, museums and schools nearby, with free trams in the centre.

East side

Norwood · Kent Town · Parkside · Unley. Starting at $210 AUD/week. Tree-lined neighborhoods, popular with students, a short walk or bike ride to the CBD and the city’s best café districts on The Parade.

Coast

Glenelg · Henley Beach · Brighton. From $250 AUD/week. The tram from the CBD gets you to Glenelg in 30 minutes. Beach living, sunset walks along Jetty Road and calmer surf than the Gold Coast.

Work

Where wine is also an industry

Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, a city of manageable size. The vineyards of Barossa and McLaren Vale hire for the grape harvest between February and April. The rest of the year, festivals and hospitality keep the pace of hiring going. If you are interested in the grape harvest, we tell you all about it in our guide to work on farms.

LIFESTYLE

Tram to the beach, vineyards for the weekend

Adelaide is famous for its size: everything is 20 minutes away. Glenelg beach is at the end of the tram line from the centre, and the Barossa and McLaren Vale vineyards an hour by car. The Adelaide Fringe is the second largest arts festival in the world.

Community

The city that feels like a town

Adelaide has a reputation for being Australia's most relaxed city: the barista already knows your order by the second week. The Italian, Greek, and Vietnamese communities are visible and active, and international students are concentrated in the center and North Adelaide. Do you prefer to compare before deciding? Here are all your cities of Australia.
