An English course in Australia can last from a few weeks to more than a year. The length depends on your starting level, the goal you want to reach and how long you can stay in the country.

If you want to become more confident using English in everyday life, a few months may be enough. If you need to reach the level required for a vocational course or university, you will need to plan more carefully.

As a guide, moving up one English level usually takes 10 to 12 weeks, although everyone progresses at a different pace.

Approximate course length based on your goal

This table will help you make an initial estimate:

Main goalApproximate length
Improve your conversation skills and confidence8 to 12 weeks
Move up one English level10 to 12 weeks
Move up two levels20 to 24 weeks
Prepare for an official exam10 to 12 weeks
Prepare to study a VET course or attend universityAbout 10 weeks of EAP
Improve several levels from a low starting point6 to 12 months

These timeframes are a guide. The school will assess your level and may recommend a different number of weeks.

How to work out how many weeks you need

Before you enrol, you need to know your actual level. Many people understand quite a lot of English when they read or listen but find it harder to speak, write or follow a fast conversation.

Schools will give you a test to place you at the right level. Some let you take it before enrolment, while others do it on the first day of class.

Levels are usually organised as follows:

  • Beginner.
  • Elementary.
  • Pre-Intermediate.
  • Intermediate.
  • Upper-Intermediate.
  • Advanced.

If you start at Pre-Intermediate and want to reach Upper-Intermediate, you will probably need to move up two levels. As a guide, that could mean 20 to 24 weeks of study.

Attendance, study outside class and daily contact with the language also make a difference. Living in Australia gives you more opportunities to practise, but you will not improve just by being in the country. You will need to use English in class, at home and in real-life situations.

Types of English courses you can study

Not all English courses have the same goal. Choosing the right program is just as important as deciding how long to study.

General English

General English covers the skills you need to communicate: listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary.

It is the usual choice for people who want to improve their English to live, travel or work in Australia. Courses often start every Monday, although dates vary by school.

You can study General English for a few weeks or stay in the program for several months. As you progress, the school moves you to the next level.

English for Academic Purposes

English for Academic Purposes, known as EAP, is designed for students who want to continue into vocational or university study.

It covers skills such as academic writing, presentations, reading comprehension and assignment preparation. It usually lasts about 10 weeks, although each institution sets its own timetable and entry requirements.

An EAP course is more demanding than General English. You will normally need a certain level before you can enrol.

Exam preparation

These courses prepare you for exams such as IELTS or Cambridge. They usually last about 10 to 12 weeks and have a minimum entry level.

They may suit you if you need an official result to enter another course, prove your English level or meet a specific requirement.

Before choosing one, check which certificate is accepted by the school or institution you want to attend.

English for a professional field

Some schools offer courses focused on specific settings, such as Business English or English for hospitality.

The length varies by program. These courses can help you learn professional vocabulary, but they do not always replace the English level required to enter a VET course or university.

What English level do you need for a VET course?

Vocational courses, or VET courses, usually require an intermediate or upper-intermediate level of English.

As a guide, many institutions ask for a level equivalent to IELTS 5.5, although the requirement varies by course and school. Some let you prove your level through their own internal test.

If you have not yet reached the required level, you can combine an English course with a VET course. A common option is to study English for 10 to 12 weeks and then start the vocational course, although the exact length will depend on your level and the program requirements.

The package should be planned before you apply for your Student Visa. This lets you confirm the full duration, course fees and start dates.

What visa do you need to study English in Australia?

The right visa mainly depends on the length of the course and what you want to do during your stay.

Visitor visa

A visitor visa allows you to study for up to three months, but you cannot work.

It may suit you if you want to take a short course and travel around Australia. If you plan to study for longer or work while you study, you will need to consider another option.

Work and Holiday

A Work and Holiday visa allows you to study for up to four months.

This visa is mainly designed for travel and work. First-time applications are also subject to age, nationality and annual quota requirements. In September 2026, applications are paused for Spain, Chile and Argentina, among other countries.

Student Visa

A Student Visa allows you to study for the full length of your course and work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods. During official course breaks, the general work-hour limit does not apply.

To apply, you need to enrol in an eligible course, receive a Confirmation of Enrolment and take out compulsory OSHC health insurance.

If you want to study English for more than three months and work during your stay, this is usually the first visa worth considering.

How much does it cost to study English in Australia?

An English course costs approximately 250 to 450 AUD per week. The price depends on the school, city, number of weeks and available promotions.

As a guide:

LengthApproximate course fee
12 weeksAUD 3,000 to AUD 5,400
24 weeksAUD 6,000 to AUD 10,800
36 weeksAUD 9,000 to AUD 16,200
48 weeksAUD 12,000 to AUD 21,600

Enrolment, materials and other school fees may be added to this amount.

A lower weekly price does not always mean a better overall deal. You should also look at the timetable, location, facilities, class size and whether the course can lead into your next program.

How to choose the right course length

Before deciding how many weeks to study, think about the result you want to achieve.

If your priority is to speak with more confidence, a 12- to 24-week course can help you build a stronger foundation. If you need to enter a VET course, first check the required level and compare it with your test result.

You should also consider:

  • How long you want to stay in Australia.
  • Your available budget.
  • The visa you can apply for.
  • The start date of your next course.
  • The English level required by the school.
  • Whether you want to work during your stay.

Enrolling in a course that is too short may leave you far from your goal. Choosing many more weeks than you need will also increase your budget. A placement test and a clear plan will help you choose the right length.
