Certificates to work in Australia
With a student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight in Australia. What many people don't know is that for some jobs they will ask you for a specific certificate, and without it, they won't even look at your resume.
These are short, cheap courses that can be completed in days. Out of ignorance, many people reject good offers or don't even know they existed. Here are the top six.
The most important thing: not all of them are valid throughout Australia
Many certificates are state-issued. An RSA obtained in Queensland is not valid in New South Wales, and the same goes for the Blue Card and traffic control certifications.
Before paying for anything, be clear about which state you will be working in. If you are planning to move from Sydney to Melbourne in a few months, ask us first: you could save yourself from having to get it twice.
RSA · Responsible Service of Alcohol
The most important of all if you go into hospitality, which is where the majority of our students go.
What is it for?
It is mandatory for sell or serve alcoholbars, pubs, wine list restaurants, bottle shops. Any establishment where alcoholic beverages are served asks for it.
How much does it cost and how long does it last?
It varies quite a bit depending on the state and the center, usually between 60 and 200 AUD. The course is usually completed in one day. In some states it can be done online and in others it is strictly in person.
Do I absolutely need it to work in the hospitality industry?
Not always. If you carry plates, take orders, or work in the kitchen, it's not necessary. In a coffee shop or a bakery either, because alcohol is not sold. RSA is only mandatory to sell alcohol. That said, having it multiplies the available offers.
Special care with New South WalesRSA obtained in another state is not recognized there. If you are going to work in Sydney, get it in Sydney.
White Card · Construction
Mandatory for stepping onto any construction site, whether you are a laborer, cleaner, architect, or engineer. Without it, you don't enter, no exceptions.
Requirements
- Sufficient English level to follow the course and pass the exam
- To have the Unique Student Identifier (USI), which is requested for free online
- Personal protective equipment for the practical part: helmet, safety boots, vest, gloves, glasses and ear protectors. At a hardware store it costs around 150 AUD
Cost and duration
Between 40 and 100 AUD depending on the center. It is usually a morning of theory plus an exam. They give you a provisional certificate valid for about two months and the card arrives later by mail.
Does it expire?
No, unless you stop working in construction for two consecutive years. If you got it in person, it is usually valid in several states, but confirm before paying.
The course is delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Each state has its own work health and safety authority with the official list of approved providers: check your state before booking.
Blue Card · Working with children
Required for any job involving direct contact with children: daycare centers, schools, private tutoring, extracurricular activities, camps, or pediatric healthcare.
How is it obtained
It is not a course: it is a background check done by the state government. You apply online at the corresponding agency and they review your history.
Cost and deadlines
It is around 100 AUD, and it usually is free for volunteers and interns. Processing takes between three and four weeks if the documentation is correct, so request it well in advance.
Change name according to the state
"Blue Card is what it's called in Queensland. In other states it has a different name and process, but the function is the same: to prove that you can work with children.
Barista · Coffee Culture
In Australia, coffee is serious business and knowing how to make it well opens many doors. This is the only one on the list that is not mandatory, but it can make all the difference.
Is it worth it?
It depends. If you already have experience, the manager will give you a practical test and the certificate matters very little. If you don't have it, it is worth it: there are coffee shops that train their people, but arriving with the certificate puts you ahead of someone who doesn't have it.
Cost and format
Between 60 and 120 AUD depending on the center. These are in-person courses, short or long. Some include the RSA in the same package, so the question is: you save yourself a course.
RSG / RCG · Gambling
It is called RCG in New South Wales and RSG in the rest. It is mandatory for working in casinos, racecourses, and pubs with gaming machines or betting. The course trains you to detect and help with cases of problem gambling.
Format by status
Some states allow doing it online in three or four hours, others require in-person attendance of about six hours including an exam. In Western Australia it is not required. Check the current requirement in your state before booking.
Cost
It costs around 70 AUD and does not expire. You can also deduct it as a work-related expense on your tax return.
Traffic Controller
The celebrities crossing guardsthe ones who direct traffic with the STOP/SLOW paddle near construction sites and roads. It is among the highest-paying jobs without prior qualifications, and that is why the initial investment is worth it.
What do you need
- The White Card first. Without her you cannot do the rest of the courses
- Be over 18 years old
- Sufficient English to understand instructions and communicate with the public
- No criminal record
- Some companies ask for a valid driver's license and medical certificate because it is physical work
Cost, duration, and validity
Between two and three days of coursework, and about 300-400 AUD in total. It is renewed every three years. It sounds like a lot, but with what you get paid in the industry, you make it back in a short time.
Here the state notice is critical
Traffic control certifications They are not transferable between states. If you get them in New South Wales, they aren't valid in Victoria. With how much they cost, be very sure where you are going to work before paying.
Each state has its own transportation or occupational safety agency, which publishes which specific courses it requires and which centers are authorized. Look it up for your state or ask us and we will guide you.
